Theater and Dance
Marcelo Martinez Vieira believes that when music and dramaturgy combine the music becomes alive, just as the character does in a play and thus, inspires any creative process in a unique way. Realizing the potential of the cellos sound as a rich support for images, dramaturgy, and movement Marcelo began to research music for dance and theatrical purposes. He also trained as dancer and actor in Gedan (Dance Studies Group – Education College – Unicamp) and in Lume (Nucleus for Interdisciplinary Research in Theater - Unicamp), However, his experience as musician in this field began in 1997 when he acted and developed the soundtrack for Molière´s “Don Juan,” playing live with the extinct theater group “Hádeuses” from Esalq-Usp in Piracicaba.
During his final years of studies in undergraduate music courses, Marcelo took courses in dance and began to dedicate himself intensively to the composition of soundtracks for dance and theater performances. As a result, he was honored with being the best soundtrack composer at the I Metropolitan Region of Campinas Theater Festival for the soundtrack of “The Trial.” This was a play based on Kafka´s novel, staged by the Galeria 4 theater company. He also developed and performed (cello & voice) live, the soundtrack for a dance-theater performance called “Alma de Papel” (Paper Soul), produced by Terraço Teatro de Campinas.
In addition to attending classes and rehearsals at the Dance Department in Unicamp, Marcelo performed live several times; improvising and composing for solo and group choreographed works, under the orientation of Profs. Julia Ziviane and Angela Nolf. The highlights of this occasion were: the resident artist program in 2006, a work directed by Armando Aurich (from the São Paulo City Ballet Company), and performing the soundtrack live. In 2006, “About Fedoras and Anastacias,” a work in which he also took part in the dramaturgic conception and production, and “After Green,” performed by the “In Vitro” Dance Company were awarded by the PAC 2008 (Program for Cultural Support from the State Secretary of Culture of São Paulo). Marcelo also composed, recorded, and produced the soundtrack for three graduate works by Patricia Leal: “Bitter Scent,” “Intense,” and “Variations under Chocolates,” and also for the performance “The picture I took of the flowers,” for Lina Penteado Ballet Company in 2007-2008.
In 2008, Marcelo toured in Brazil alongside the Myiako Kato Dance Space Company (Tokyo-Japan) through a program from the Japan Foundation for the celebration of 100 years of Japan Immigration to Brazil. He played live and shared the stage with Myiako Kato, Akira Kasai, and Kim Itoh.
